World Intellectual Property Organization Releases Global Innovation Index 2023 – China Outranks the US in Top 100 Science and Technology Clusters

Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, the United Kingdom and Singapore are the world’s most innovative economies in 2023, according to WIPO’s Global Innovation Index (GII).  China – the only middle-income economy in the GII top 30 – ranks 12th – down from 11th in 2022.  However, for the first time, in 2023, China has the most Science & Technology (S&T) clusters (24) ranked among the top 100, overtaking the United States with 21 clusters unchanged from 2022.  Based on S&T intensity, only 1 Chinese cluster – Beijing –  made the top 25 versus 8 U.S. clusters.

Per WIPO, “The GII 2023 uses 80 indicators to track global innovation trends in 130-plus economies, guiding policy makers and business leaders in stimulating human ingenuity. This year, the report’s findings are unveiled against a background of slow economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, high interest rates and geopolitical conflict.”
